The name Break the tides came about while I was working graveyard shifts at a warehouse distributing center in Sacramento, CA some time around 2010. Simple concept. It’s a metaphor for perseverance through life, like standing in the ocean against the waves as the break and stand your ground through all of the shit life gives you. I used to get out of work, then go strait to my rehearsal studio and write and practice the songs for like 3-4 hours every day. At that time, I had just left a band called Five Years Forgotten as a vocalist, and had already been developing my own songs for years before, but was now able to play guitar enough to build songs instead of just relying on a guitarist.
I should mention the song Suicide Society had a version in Five Years forgotten, although that song has ended up going through several versions and goes back to first writing it in around 2003, when I lived in Reno, Nevada. The album, which has yet to be finalized, recorded and released has it’s origins from that time. The song Black Rose was basically the first song that I wrote on guitar, around 2008-2009 when I was living on my brother’s orchard in Winter’s, CA. So from 2008-2010ish, I was developing a bulk of Break the tides songs and albums, including Center of Clarity, An Evolution to Strive For, and Pure. When I moved to Santa Barbara, CA in around 2011, I wrote Curse of the stray after a bad break up. All through this time, I had tried to put together line ups, but nothing really stuck. I had a couple line ups for my metal project, Above the world, and spent a few years recording albums and putting together video albums for my Art punk project September Begins.
2017 is when Break the Tides started to get some traction. Ryan Bates from Warbringer came and auditioned in my garage studio in Ventura, CA for drums. He brought in Jake McClatchy in on bass. The two had went to high school together and played in bands before. Curtis Thompson came in on lead guitar, and the first 3 track demo Ep and Music video was recorded and released that year. We also played quite a few shows and opened up for The Menzingers. Center of Clarity was recorded in the garage, but Ryan Bates left, slowing the momentum down for quite some time. We put out Center of Clarity, worked with another drummer named Josh, played a few shows together, but Ryan Bates ended up coming back. We upgraded our gear, and recorded An Evolution to strive for. We had to cut Curtis from the band, which was very difficult since he was extremely dedicated and a friend. We just couldn’t get him to the level we needed at the time, and so Alex Jolly would end up doing the lead guitar for An Evolution to strive for. Fix it Ticket was written somewhere around 2020, when I tried to do a project with Josh. It’s still in the writing process, and Thrasher is a collection of songs that were written in 2017, including some that Curtis wrote on guitar.
That brings us to now. Break the tides has been dormant, but not dead. The pandemic almost killed it, and I was able to finish mixing and putting out An Evolution to Strive for, but this year marks a new chapter. With the new AI tools, I’m finally able start doing what I’ve always wanted to do, which is to create Art and Video albums. I’ve also stopped relying on building a band, which is liberating for me, since it allows me to just focus on the art. The change came about at the same time I reestablished contact with Ryan Bates, who agreed to help me remix and Master Center of Clarity.
So, what comes next? Center of Clarity videos, Art and Lyrics are under current development, getting ready to be released, remixed and mastered, followed by An Evolution to Strive for. I’m hoping to release Fix it Ticket after that.
